COPDEND announces plans to develop a Quality Assurance Framework for CPD in Dentistry

In January 2014, COPDEND commissioned research to identify the evidence-base and make recommendations for a Quality Assurance Framework for Dental CPD.
Professor Linda Prescott-Clements and Associates have been awarded a contract to develop a Quality Assurance Framework for Dental CPD in the UK that is evidence-based, deliverable and acceptable to UK professionals. The framework will encompass CPD undertaken by all dental professionals (dentists and DCPs) and is planned to be available by the end of 2014.
A systematic review of the literature has been completed together with over 50 in-depth telephone interviews with major stakeholders. An Expert Advisory Group comprising of a wide range of NHS and private providers of Dental CPD from across the UK has considered the evidence and a draft QA framework is now being prepared for consultation.
The telephone interviews have included private providers, postgraduate deaneries, universities, Medical Royal Colleges, Dental Faculties, Specialist Societies and professional organisations encompassing a wide range of CPD such as short courses and longer certificated courses, which are delivered face to face or via e-learning, blended learning, journals and conferences.
The focus is very much on developing a ‘usable’ framework that will be a helpful resource for both Dental Professionals (when choosing CPD), and for providers in the development and implementation of CPD activities.
A consultation exercise has been planned for September 2014. Following careful consideration of the feedback from the consultation, we anticipate being able to launch the Quality Assurance Framework before the end of this year.
Helen Falcon, Chair of COPDEND said “I am really looking forward to the publication of this framework and am confident that the extensive and in-depth research that has been done, combined with expert advice and wide involvement of dental professionals and CPD providers, will result in a relevant and helpful tool for dentist and DCPs to use when choosing CPD activities.”
